Northern Aspire Network launches in Leeds!

LexisNexis currently run an established and successful in-house networking forum in London for junior lawyers called Aspire. They are keen to launch Aspire in the North and where better to start the Northern Aspire Network than in our very own Leeds? The C&I Group Yorkshire and the Leeds Junior Lawyers Division are coming together with LexisNexis to make this happen.

    What is Aspire?

Aspire is a free networking and professional development group for in-house lawyers in the early stages of their legal career. The aims are to encourage and support each other to succeed, to provide a forum to share experiences and ideas and to sharpen legal and commercial skills.

How will this work in the North?

LexisNexis, the C&I Group Yorkshire and the Leeds JLD are joining forces to bring junior in-house lawyers together. The Aspire network is aimed at junior lawyers from paralegals through to solicitors of 5 years’ PQE from across the north of England. We intend on providing bi-annual events with each meeting focused on learning and development, providing legal and soft skills training alongside an opportunity to network, compare notes and swap stories with others embarking on their in-house legal careers. We intend for these to be short sessions or half-day sessions tailored to in-house lawyers’ needs with a number of more frequent networking events during the year.

Why we are excited about this?

Because, starting out in your legal career in-house isn’t like being a junior in a law firm. You haven’t got a firm full of lawyers to turn to for advice or support. With in-house lawyers on the rise and companies offering training contracts as alternatives to firms, we really believe an in-house community would help young lawyers to connect and learn from each other, plus, who doesn’t love a free drink?

What value does it provide to both me and my organisation?

    - Receive focussed, relevant, quality training from LexisNexis.

    - Build a network of peers and get encouragement from like-minded peers or mentors in similar environments.

    - Learn crucial soft skills to help junior lawyers succeed and for day-to-day interactions with their commercial colleagues.

    - Gain insight and best practice from external speakers.

The launch of Aspire in the North

The Northern Aspire Network launches at an event on 28th September 2017 (2.30pm – 5pm), kindly hosted by DWF LLP at their Bridgewater Place offices in Leeds. The structure of the event will be 4 sessions; two legal training and two skills based followed by networking. We would love the Northern Aspire Network to match the success of the London group and so would be grateful for your support in making this group a success.

If you are a junior lawyer (up to 5 years’ PQE) based in the north of England and would like to come to the Northern Aspire Network launch please send your email address to yorkshire@cigroup.org.uk and we will ensure that you receive all future communications regarding the launch. Similarly, if you manage junior lawyers please encourage and support them to attend the Northern Aspire Network launch or alternatively please ask them to send their details through to us and we will ensure they are added to the mailing list.

Feedback and suggestions for future sessions

We appreciate that this network will need buy in from the senior lawyers in-house who manage teams and we welcome your feedback. So please get in touch to let us know whether this would be something you would encourage members of your team to attend, and if so, what training or support you would like them to receive.
